Mary, Bob and Brad were sitting at our kitchen table and Mary presented the idea. Bob and Brad were in immediate agreement about doing this.
Mary began thinking about what we, as a family, could do to honor Jeff and in that process to bring some sense to our loss and to bring some hope to transplant patients. She began to think about his early diagnosis, when we were told that his health insurance only would do transplants through a hospital in Birmingham, Alabama…and the ramifications of that. What came to mind was building a house for transplant patients and their families in Atlanta. The picture that came to her mind was an affordable home-like setting, close to one of Atlanta’s transplant hospitals, where families of patients who are in the hospital could stay while they had a loved one in the process of a transplant.
